No-guess minesweeper: the 50/50 is a bug, not a feature

Every minesweeper player knows the moment: twenty minutes of clean deduction, two tiles left, and the numbers genuinely cannot tell you which one hides the mine. You flip a mental coin, you click, you die. That's not a hard puzzle — that's a slot machine wearing a puzzle's clothes.

What "no-guess" means

A no-guess (or "no guessing") board is one where, at every point in the solve, at least one safe move is provable from the visible numbers. You may still have to look hard for it — no-guess doesn't mean easy — but pure logic is always sufficient. If you ever truly have to gamble, the board was broken, not you.

How a board gets certified

You can't eyeball this property; it has to be proven. The generator plays its own board with a solver that is only allowed logical deductions — no probabilities, no luck. If the solver gets stuck before clearing the board, that layout is thrown away and regenerated. Only boards the solver can walk end-to-end on logic alone ever reach a player. That's how Grimlings does it: every floor, from the first Mini to the deep dense ones, is certified by GrimlingsSolver before you see it.

Why it changes how the game feels

Deaths become your fault — in the good way. When there's always a logical way through, losing a heart means you missed something, not that the universe rolled against you. Frustration turns into "one more run".

Stakes can be real. Grimlings gives you a shared pool of hearts across a whole descent. That only works because the game never forces a coin flip: a perfect player never bleeds, so hearts measure skill, not luck.

Deduction gets deeper, not shallower. In Grimlings the numbers are the summed fangs of neighbouring monsters (ranks 1–3), so a "3" might be one Maw or three Nibs. Richer clues plus guaranteed solvability means the interesting part of minesweeper — the logic — is the whole game.
